Abstract
570,829. Feeding envelopes to machines. NATIONAL POSTAL METER CO.,Inc. April 3, 1944, No. 6135. Convention date, April 22, 1943. [Class 100 (i)] In the feeding of envelopes from a hopper to a mail-treating machine, which is especially applicable for dealing with unsealed stuffed envelopes with their flaps in nested position, one side of the envelope hopper is formed with a flexible member 14 formed of material such as phosphor bronze. The member 14 normally lies in a vertical plane, and is secured to the inclined front 16 of the hopper by means of a narrow slot 14c through which passes a headed screwed stud 21 which is connected by a nut 25 to the flange 22 of a bracket 23 screwed to a plate 24 forming a wall of the mail-treating machine. A coiled spring is arranged between the member 14 and the flange 22 so as to press the member 14 towards the edge of the pile and keep the envelope flaps in a vertical position thus facilitating the feeding off of the bottom sheets. The bottom of the member 14 is fastened to a plate 20 having an inclined upper edge 20a. If the pile tends to bulge outwards, the part 20 maintains its vertical position by engaging a fixed abutment, and the part 14d curves to conform to the pile and serves to keep the flaps vertical. The trailing ends of the envelopes are supported by a curved plate 15, which inclines the stack towards the plate 16 so as to facilitate the withdrawal of the bottom envelope.
