Abstract

944,255. Feeding sheets. H. M. ENGLAND. March 26, 1962 [March 24, 1961], No. 10832/61. Heading B6B. [Also in Division B8] In an office machine for dealing with mail, envelopes are stacked in a hopper 28 with adjustable sides on a table 2, and are separated sequentially through a side slot by a friction roller 4 and gripped by feed rollers 6, 14 which deposit them on a pad 36 with their open flaps facing the front of the machine. When a letter &c. has been inserted in the envelope on the pad 36 by hand, the envelope is pushed between feed rollers 70, 72 and is fed to a delivery position, or a franking machine, by further pairs of feed rollers 8, 16, 10, 18, and 12, 20. The envelope flap is folded upwardly by a curved guide plate 42, is moistened by a device 68, and the envelope is then sealed before delivery. The rollers 4, 6, 70, 8, 10, and 12 are driven by a motor beneath the table 2 and protrude through slots in the table. The separator roller 4 is arranged to be moved upwardly by a manuallyoperable feed-bar each time it is desired to separate an envelope from the hopper 28. One end of each feed roller 16, 18, and 20 is mounted in a spring toggle device 66 for quick release in the event of envelopes jamming. An adjustable fence is arranged at the rear of the table 2 to guide the envelopes.
