Abstract
570,296. Ladders. EDWARDS, D. W. S. Sept. 1, 1943, No. 14299. [Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] A fire escape comprises a number of hinged ladder sections 10 attached to a trolley at the upper end, the trolley being mounted on a wheeled carriage 13 supported on overhead rails 15 in an upper storey of the building so as to be movable from the inside of the room to the window. The hinged ladder sections 10 are folded alternately forwards and backwards in collapsing by pulling upon a cable 17 which is secured at its lower end to the bottom section and which passes alternately in front of and behind the successive hinge axes 11 of the sections. Release of the cable permits the ladder to extend. The cable 17 is wound on a hand or power operated drum 18 to which it passes from the top end of the ladder through a swivelling cross-piece 10<a> the angular position of which in relation to the window is adjusted by sliding rods and steering cords 26 which pass around a hand-operated wheel 28. A winding drum 24 and cable 25 are provided to draw the trolley inward from the window A and a wheeled gangway 30, which normally rests in the floor, may be moved to extend outside to facilitate access to the ladder.
