Abstract

An adhesive composition is formed by adding an organic di-isocyanate to crude or reclaimed natural rubber, gutta-percha, or balata. Any aliphatic or aromatic di-isocyanate may be used, compounds specified being methylene di(p-phenylene isocyanate), p- or m-phenylene di-isocyanate, the diphenylene di-isocyanates, the toluylene di - isocyanates, the dimethyl phenylene di-isocyanates, the naphthylene di-isocyanates, hexamethylene di-isocyanate, the di-isocyanates of dioxane, ethylene di-(oxytrimethylene isocyanate), or the di-isocyanates of glycol ethers or dipropyl ethers. The amount of di-isocyanate added may be up to 20 per cent of the adhesive solids employed, but usually not more than 5 per cent is necessary. Modifying agents such as resins, plasticizers, diluents, fillers, vulcanizing-agents, accelerators, or age-resistors may also be added. The rubber and di-isocyanate may be applied to the surface in one or two stages, but in the former case, the rubber and di-isocyanate are mixed only a short time before use.
