Abstract

570,111. Light-sensitive glass. HADDAN, R. (Corning Glass Works). July 5, 1943, No. 10875. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Groups VIII, IX and XXIII] After glass, produced from a batch containing a copper compound, a reducing agent, e.g. sodium cyanide or abietic acid, and optionally stannic oxide, has been made and whilst it is still colourless it is subjected to ultra-violet or other short-wave radiations. It may then be heat-treated to turn it ruby red, the change of colour occurring more quickly and at a lower temperature than when non-irradiated copper glass is heat-treated. During irradiation, the glass turns blue, so that, by shielding some parts, a design with some parts blue and the remainder colourless may be obtained if the heat treatment is not given, or with some parts red and the remainder colourless if a heat treatment is given at a temperature and of a duration sufficient to affect only the irradiated parts or if the parts which are to be red are made thicker than those which are to be colourless. The colourless portions may then be irradiated, whereby a design in red and blue may be produced. A glass sheet produced from such batch may, before irradiation, be coated with a photographic emulsion and a negative image formed thereon ; the glass is then irradiated, the negative removed and the glass heat-treated to develop a ruby-coloured image. Alternatively, an object may be illuminated with short-wave radiation, and an image thereof focussed on the glass which is subsequently heat-treated to develop the colour of the image. The invention may also be applied to fabrics made of glass threads of this composition.
