[Class 91] The process described in Specification 537,704 for refining glyceride oils wherein a positively charged colloidal suspension of colouring matter in the oils is removed by admixing with the oil an aqueous solution containing a negatively charged colloidal suspension in an amount such that the electrical charge is approximately neutralized, is modified by forming the added colloidal suspension in situ in the oil by dissolving directly therein a metallic compound in a form which will react with an alkaline agent to form the negatively charged colloidal suspension and intimately mixing the alkaline agent with the solution. In a modification for use where the colouring matter is electrically neutral, the colloidal suspension may be produced by the addition of water to a hydrolysable metallic compound instead of the alkaline agent. The refined oil is then separated from the added materials and the impure colouring matter such as by centrifuging as described in the earlier Specification. The variations in operation of the process, such as by mixing the oil solution and the alkali in mist form and working in a one or two-step procedure to also remove the free fatty acids are as described in Specification 537,704. Suitable metallic compounds soluble in the oils which will form these oxides or hydroxides with the alkali or water include such compounds as trimethyl, diethyl, and tridodecylaluminium, tetramethyl, and tetraethyl-tin, and chlorides of tin, titanium, and aluminium.
