Abstract
569,813. Electric heating. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Sept. 19, 1941, No. 12027. Convention date, Dec. 27, 1940. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group V] Radiant heat is applied non-uniformly to a thermoplastic sheet 10 placed over a negative die 8, the heat being so regulated that the condition of greatest plasticity is effected in those parts of the sheet (e.g, the edges thereof) which, under conditions of uniform plasticity would stretch the least when air was evacuated from the die through a pipe 12. The result is that on thus heating and then applying suction to draw the sheet against the face of the mould, the thickness of the moulded article is more uniform throughout than would be the case with uniform heating (which results in thick edges and a thin centre). The heat is applied by a bank of infrared lamps 3 carried by a support 1. The regulation of heat is effected (a) by uncrewing from their sockets some of the lamps e.g. the central ones, (b) by switch control, (c) by placing various heating units at different distances from the sheet or (d) locating heating units in a plane forming a dihedral angle with the plane of the sheet. The lamps may be energised singly or in groups. The support 1 may be vertically adjustable, as by means of counterbalancing weights 5, or may be fixed, '.he die being then vertically adjustable.
