Abstract

569,340. Moulding articles from thermoplastic sheet material.BYERS, J. S., HAMBLIN, F. T., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 29, 1941, No. 16718. [Class 87 (ii)] In moulding an article from a sheet of thermoplastic material the sheet is made plastic, prior to shaping, either (a) by heating the sheet and controlling the heating so as to give a predetermined differential plasticity thereto, or (b) by heating the sheet and then so cooling it as to give a - predetermined differential plasticity thereto. (a) A sheet 10 is clamped in a flange 9 to which is connected a flexible pipe 8 through which air under pressure can be forced, and a bank of infra-red heating lamps 3 is disposed over the sheet, the bank being adjustable vertically by means of counterweights 5. The lamps 3 may be energized individually or in small groups; for example; the outermost lamps may be energized and the central lamps left dead, so that the rim of the sheet is heated to a greater degree than the centre. When the sheet has been sufficiently heated the flange 9 is swung around so that the sheet covers the opening into a matrix 12, the sheet is forced into the matrix by compressed air and the moulded article is allowed to cool and then removed from the matrix. The article has a substantially uniform thickness. In modifications, (1) the sheet is clamped between rings, differentially heated, and forced over a patrix by applying hand-pressure to the rings, (2) the sheet is laid upon felt or brown paper, differentially heated and shaped in a matrix or over a patrix, (3) the heating may be effected by hanging the sheet vertically between two banks of infra-red lamps, (4) the sheet 10 may be blown into hemispherical or spherical shape without the use of a matrix, (5) the lamps 3 may be placed in more than one plane at different distances from the sheet 10, or may be located in a plane forming a dihedral angle with the plane of the sheet. (b) The sheet is heated in an oven, and air is blown on to the heated sheet through unevenly - spaced holes in a plate P. By the invention, articles of uniform or non-uniform thickness may be produced. The thermoplastic material may be cellulose acetate or polymerized methyl methacrylate.
