Abstract

1,160,779. Sheet forming. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 July, 1968 [25 July, 1967], No. 34171/67. Heading B5A. In a sheet forming apparatus, for particular use in the production of articles such as bath tubs from relatively thick sheet material, a series of blanks are heat softened in an oven successively transferred from the oven to a differential pressure forming station, and finally formed to the desired shape at the station. In the embodiment shown in the Figure, polymethyl methacrylate blanks are transferred from a stack 11 by a suction device 10 and a roller conveyer 12 to a forced convection oven 13 in which they are collectively heat softened. After its desired residence period each blank is transferred from the oven over roller conveyer 14 to a station 24 at which bath tubs are drawn using a plunger assisted vacuum forming mould 23. The drawn tubs are subsequently removed from the mould, clamped over forms carried by conveyer 16 and passed between edge trimming saws 31 and 32. In an alternative embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown), the blanks are suspended vertically from a closed loop track and are transferred first to a heating oven, then to a plunger assisted vacuum forming station, and then to a take-off station. A cleaning station, at which the blanks are washed scrubbed and then dried, may be located in front of the oven in each embodiment.
