Abstract

The invention consists in an aqueous polyvinyl acetate emulsion capable of producing stable water-resistant films and coatings comprising resin and a plasticizer therefor compatible in part at least with the resin and being in excess of 40 per cent by weight of the polyvinyl acetate with or without a thickener, a pigment or a filler. The emulsion may be used for coating fibrous materials or fabrics, or for use in water-resistant paints. Any compatible plasticizer may be used; specified are di-isobutyl adipate, di-butoxy ethyl phthalate, ethyl phthalyl ethyl glycollate dibutyl phthalate and triethylene glycol di-2-ethyl butyrate. Mixtures of compatible with incompatible plasticizers may be used, e.g. mixtures with glycerine or glycols. Specified thickeners are sodium alginate (Kelgin solution), and locust bean or lakoe gums. Examples are given of formul consisting of polyvinyl acetate emulsion consisting of polyvinyl acetate emulsion and (1) di-isobutyl phthalate, chalk and lakoe gum; (2) a mixture of di-isobutyl and dibutyl phthalates, gum tragacanth, water and a colour base; and (3) the mixture of phthalates as in (2), starch, water and chalk.
