Abstract

Leather cloth is made by coating a fabric base with a composition comprising a polymer of vinyl chloride, which is insoluble in toluene but soluble in cyclohexanone, dissolved in a solvent, the amount of polymer being 5-20 per cent by weight of the solvent. If desired, the composition may also comprise a pigment and/or a softener (preferably not in excess of the weight of polymer). It may also comprise an additional film-forming ingredient, e.g. blown linseed, stand, or blown castor oils. Suitable solvents and solvent mixtures are butyl acetate, cyclohexanone, methyl ethyl ketone and mixtures of cyclohexanone, acetone and benzole, cyclohexanone and methyl ethyl ketone with or without benzole and butyl acetate and acetone. Specified plasticizers are tricresyl phosphate, di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate, octyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate and butyl acetyl ricinoleate. Listed pigments include lithopone, titanium dioxide, blanc fixe and carbon black.
