Abstract

569,388. Silvering; extracting silver. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., NEW, A. A., and BODYCOMBE, E. L. May 19, 1943, No. 7941. [Classes 82 (i) and 82 (ii)] Finely comminuted silver is manufactured by precipitating from highly concentrated solutions of silver salts at high temperatures in the presence of high molecular weight, watersoluble organic compounds, such as gelatine or liquorice extract. The precipitation may be effected by adding ammonium formate in a water solution or in the solid form. A paste suitable for application to a surface by brushing, printing or spraying is made by separating the silver in a centrifuge, washing and mixing the separated silver with a liquid vehicle which is mutually soluble with water to the extent to which it is used. Suitable liquids are water, glycerol, ethylene glycol, methyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol. It is desirable to retain about 5 per cent of a high molecular weight organic compound content in the paste. This content is adjusted by additions to the separated and washed silver. When used in the manufacture of silvered mica condensers, or generally in the production of silver films on non-metallic surfaces, the paste is applied to the surface which is then fired at a temperature below 350‹ C. for 5-15 minutes. Electrical condensers made in this manner give consistantly good power factors of between 0.00005-0.0003 measured at 1 kc. per second.
