Abstract

568,950. Felt making. WHITEHEAD & BROS., Ltd., R. R., and PORRITT, C. P. Aug. 9, 1943, No. 12799. [Class 42 (ii)] A batt of felt is formed by feeding a continuous web of fibre upon a conveyer, moving parallel with the fibres, the speed of feed being greater than the speed of the conveyer, the web of fibre being formed into a plurality of layers 39 which are then compressed to form the batt of felt. The machine is driven by an electric motor &c. through a master variable speed gear 1A which turns the shaft 12 and hence the shaft 2 of a variable speed gear-box which drives the doffer 7 to take the web of fibres from the swift 1 and lead it to the conveyer 8, 9 which passes it to downwardly moving belts 14, 15, the lower ends of which are mounted on a reciprocating carriage 16. The drive for the carriage is taken from variable speed gears 43, 49 through reduction gears and pulleys, with open and crossed belts 47, 48, driving fast pulleys on the shaft 24 which turns the sprocket 18 which, through a chain 17, operates the carriage. The belts 47, 48 are shifted by means of a fork moved by stops 31, 32 on a rod 30 upon contact of the carriage 16 therewith. Beneath the carriage is a conveyer 33 driven by chains 56, 57 from a reduction unit 54 driven by a variable speed gear 55 from the shaft 34, the speed of the conveyer 33 being less than the speed of the feed belts 14, 15. By reason of the reciprocation of the carriage 16 and the movement of the conveyer 33, the web of fibres is laid as at 39, Fig. 2. The folded batt is compressed by rolls 36, 37 and delivered at 38. A covering web may be overlaid thereon, such web being folded to and fro across the batt as at 40, Fig. 3.
