Abstract

A sulphonated or phosphated hydrogenated castor oil derived from a castor oil having an iodine value of not more than 11, and prepared, for example, as described in Specification 558,912, may be neutralized with sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium or organic amine cations. The degree of hydrogenation, the percentages of combined SO3 or P2O5, and of moisture, and the degree of neutralization may all be varied to give a product having the desired hardness, melting point and hydrophilic properties. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited in respect of the iodine value of the castor oil used in the preparation of the derivative.ALSO:A hydrophilic base for ointments, salves, cerates, creams and the like comprises a mixture of sulphonated or phosphated hydrogenated castor oil, derived from a castor oil having an iodine value of not more than 11 and an unctuous substance suitable for application to the skin. The castor oil derivative may be prepared as described in Specification 558,912, and may be neutralized with sodium, potassium, lithium, ammonium or organic amine cations. The degree of hydrogenation, the percentages of combined SO3 or P2O5, and of moisture, and the degree of neutralization may all be varied to give a product having the desired hardness, melting point and hydrophilic properties. Unctuous substances referred to are petrolatum, liquid petrolatum, mineral, vegetable and animal oils, fats, waxes, fatty alcohols, fatty alcohol esters, lanolin, glycerine, glycols and glycol esters. Emulsion creams are made as above with the addition of water (preferably 30-70 per cent) and emulsifying agents such as diethylene glycol monostearate, glyceryl monostearate, triethanolamine and its soaps, tri-isopropanolamine and cholesterol. Medicaments referred to are benzoic acid, boric acid, tannic acid, belladonna, Burow's solution, chrysarobin, nutgall, ammoniated mercury, iodine, phenol, pine tar, sulphur, zinc oxide, calamine, camphor, capsicum, salicylic acid, mercurous chloride, colloidal mercurous chloride, mercuric nitrate, red mercuric oxide, ichthaminol, menthol, coal tar, birch tar, potassium iodide, resorcinol, scarlet red, mustard, sulphanilamide, sulphathiazole, sulphadiazine, stramonium, alkaline sulphur, zinc stearate. Examples of ointments, cleansing, vanishing and sunburn creams have ingredients other than those referred to above as follows: stearic acid, peach kernel oil, hydroxystearic acid, spermaceti, oleyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol. U.S.A. Specification 1,940,390 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited in respect of the iodine value of the castor oil used in the preparation of the derivative, and refers to the use of the derivative alone as a base for an adhesive salve and in an example to its admixture with benzoic and salicylic acids to form an ointment.
