Abstract

568,205. Discharge apparatus. AKT.- GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Feb. 4, 1943, No. 1889. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1942. [Class 39 (i)] An electron discharge device has a number of anodes b1, b2, b3, b4 and b5 for each phase connected together by resistances c1, c2, c3 and c4, the current being supplied direct to anode b1 and a device being associated with each anode to control the resistance of the arc path. These devices serve to break the arc between cathode d and anodes b1 &c. in succession. The effect of the successive increasing resistances thus incorporated in the circuit is to diminish the voltage surge when the arc is finally broken. In the example shown, the devices are extinguishing grids, as described in Specifications . 409,33] and 430,915. Their action may follow automatically in the operation of the first grid e1 by switch g through transformers h1, h2, h3 and h4. The setting up of an arc from anode b2 onward has the effect of energizing the blocking grid of the particular anode and thus passing on the arc to the next anode. As extinguishing devices, electromagnetic fields or electrostatic combined with electromagnetic, can be used instead of grids. A gas blast circuit-breaker may be placed in series with the discharge device.
