Abstract
568,140. Treating exhaust. DANINOS, J. C. Sept. 6, 1943, No. 14576. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A device for quenching the flame of the exhaust comprises a circular inlet 10 leading to a fish-tail outlet 12 formed with corrugations or flutings 14, the device being bent once near its outlet end in a plane perpendicular thereto. The hot gases pile up in the upper part of the bend and the outer layer is cooled by air flowing thereover before it expands on leaving the outlet to form a thin, cool, protective layer which keeps the hot gases from contacting with the surrounding air and thereby prevents the formation of flame. To avoid turbulence, the inner surface of the device is smooth and its intermediate cross-section has the shape shown in Fig. 4. The corrugations may be provided with cooling fins and additional corrugations be formed on the lower face of the device. The corrugations may be strengthened by a band across their outer ends or the material there may be of double thickness. As shown in Fig. 13, the device is formed in two halves welded together and the corrugations are strengthened by a corrugated strip 26 backed by a plain strip 30.
