Abstract
567,950. Harvesting corn. TIMMIS, J. Aug. 31, 1943, No. 14156. [Class 6 (iii)] An attachment for a tractor, employed in harvesting corn and similar crops, has two forwardly extending deflector members, each inclined in the same direction with reference to the line of travel and each adapted, when the device is fixed in position on the front of the tractor, to deflect a width of standing corn to one side in advance of the tractor wheels, so that the wheels will run over the deflected straw and so kink it without running over the ears of corn. In the construction shown, the attachment comprises a frame member 1 which is secured by bolts 2 to the front axle a of the tractor and which is formed with a forwardly extending arm 3. A pair of arms 4, 5, arranged in V formation, is secured to the arm 3, and co-operating with these arms is an arm 8 having its rear portion 8a, considerably nearer the ground than the remaining portion. At the other end of the member a is a further arm 7, this arm and the arm 5 being respectively disposed in front of the left- and right-hand wheels of the tractor. In use, these two arms 5, 7 deflect the corn outwardly and the wheels b will thus pass over the straw and not the ears and, further, will kink the straw so that it does not rise again. Member 4 deflects the corn inwardly and the member 8 bruises or binds over the straw to prevent it from rising ; this portion of the bent-over straw is run over by the wheel of the binder.
