[Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group III] A tubular furnace for distilling or cracking hydrocarbon oils comprises a wall of refractory material 11, 12 forming a combustion chamber and a series of tubular heat-exchange units 19 arranged in cylindrical formation round the wall 11 so as to provide a continuous passage for the oils between adjacent inlet and outlet pipes 29, 30, the adjacent units being connected at their upper ends by detachable headers 25 which lie outside the combustion chamber. The tubes constituting the heat-exchange unit are permanently joined at their lower ends by a header 20 arranged inside the combustion chamber. The units are supported at their upper ends by segmental guide plates 17, 18, Figs. 6 and 7, arranged to permit thermal expansion of the tubes. A specially formed plate 22x, Fig. 8, is provided with two openings 22a, 22b for the inlet and outlet pipes 29, 30. The furnace may be constructed so that the height of the wall increases around the furnace from the inlet to the outlet tubes and with a removable re-radiating central cone as described in Specification 567,634, [Group XII].
