[Class 100 (i)] Sheets fed from a pile P are subjected to a preliminary separation by means of air blasts emitted from slits 11, 12 in angular boxes 10, the slits being perpendicular to the plane of the sheets so that the blasts impinge on the pile edges, preferably at both the rear and rear side edges of the pile at each rear corner thereof. The boxes 10 are carried by air tubes 15 adjustably supported by screws 19 upon brackets 18. Normally, the slits extend above the top of the pile so that as a sheet is raised a greater quantity of air is blown under the top sheets. The blasts are controlled by baffles preferably constituted by means of the face of each wall of box 10 adjacent to the edges of the pile, and the baffling effect is increased by retaining bars 20, 21 which secure the boxes in position. The boxes and the bars 20, 21 can rise relatively to the bracket 18, and the bars are guided vertically by a coverplate 23 secured in position by bolts 24 engaging the bracket 18. To prevent the top sheet from rising too highly, an adjustable stop 27 is arranged near each rear corner of the pile, and the sheet is finally separated completely from the pile by means of a suction cup 33 or other separator, and other jets of air may assist in the completion of the separation.
