Abstract

A cement for repairing damaged sheet material such as shaped plywood articles, as boats or the like, comprises an accelerator hardening phenol-aldehyde or urea-aldehyde resin, and the accelerating agent may be a mineral or organic acid, e.g. benzene sulphonic acid. It may be obtained by mixing 100 parts of phenol with 190 parts of 40 per cent formaldehyde and 15 parts sodium carbonate, boiling the mixture under reflux conditions for two hours and distilling under reduced pressure to a viscosity of 650-950 centre-strokes. After a period of about three months, a hardener or accelerator, e.g. benzene sulphonic acid, is added to the extent of 5-10 per cent.
