Abstract

Non-warping building elements are obtained by mixing bagasse with phenol-formaldehyde resin in viscous liquid form and placing a layer of the mixture in a mould, and similarly forming and placing a layer of bagasse and cresol formaldehyde resin in the mould, the phenol resin being present in higher proportions than the cresol resin, and moulding the layers under pressure and with heating. The bagasse is preferably treated in a hammer mill to defibrate the cane chumps, the parenchymatous tissue being separated and retained for the moulding mixture. The respective layers may contain: (1) 90 parts phenol formaldehyde resin and 260 parts bagasse; (2) 40 parts cresol-formaldehyde resin and 260 parts bagasse. The moulded material is preferably cooled while under pressure. Resins having the same viscosity are preferably employed.
