Abstract

566,626. Friction clutches. THELANDER, W. V. Feb. 18, 1943, No. 2728. [Class 80 (ii)]. A clutch plate comprises a hub 10 having spaced plates 12 secured thereto and an intermediate plate 20 to which the frictional members are fixed. Openings 14, 24, in the plates 12, 20, receive interfitting cylinders and pistons 17, 16, and compression springs 15. End caps 27 fixed to the plate 20 form a housing for a liquid damping medium surrounding the parts, packing members 31, 35, preventing leakage. Each cylinder 17 has a small hole 19 so that relative angular movement of the plates 12, 20, is damped in one direction by both the spring and fluid means, and in the opposite direction by the fluid means. Segmental stampings 37, 38, spaced by washers 51 are fixed to the plate 20 by rivets 25. Each stamping 37 has a U- shaped opening 43 forming a middle radial finger 44 and end fingers 45, 46, connected by arcuate webs 47, 48. Each stamping 38 has an opening 52 forming. two radial fingers 53, 54, interconnected by arcuate webs 50, 55. Friction facing material 39, 41, is secured to the stampings 37, 38, by rivets 40, 42, respectively. Flat metallic springs 56 are secured between the stampings 37, 38, by the rivets 42. Each spring 56 has three fingers 57, 58, 59 and are oppositely arranged so that the fingers 59 engage the radial finger 44 of a stamping 37 and the fingers 57, 58, engage the parts 45, 46. The part 45 is wider than the part 46 so that at one side the fingers 57, 58, engage the part 46 and also the part 45 of the adjacent stamping 37. Angular move. ment of the springs is prevented by a pressedout boss 63 engaging in a hole 64 in the stampings 38. The springs 56 permit of gradual clutch engagement. Specification 566,650 is referred to.
