Abstract
566,090. Tanks. HORSLEY BRIDGE & T. PIGGOTT, Ltd., MARTIN, J. W., and COLEMAN, R. G. V. April 7, 1943, No. 5582. [Class 69 (i)] Tanks are built up from metal plates with flanges along two parallel edges only, the plates in any one wall having their flanges parallel and adjacent so that they can be secured together as by bolts. The plates may be rolled or pressed cold, and may have stiffening ribs or embossments. In Fig. 4, the plates 20 of the end 'walls 23, 24, are arranged vertically, those of the side walls 25 horizontally, and those of the bottom 28 transverse to the end walls, the flanges 21 in each case being directed outwardly and the ends of the webs of the plates overlapping the side flanges of the adjacent walls or floor and being bolted &c. thereto. The side walls may have stiffeners such as channel members 31 with one flange bolted to the walls, and the web extending inwardly ; opposite stiffeners may be tied together as by an angle member 32. A cover may be provided constructed similarly to the bottom or built up of end plates 33 with a downward flange 34 for connection to the adjacent end wall and an upward flange 35; plates 20 are arranged between the end plates 33 and, if desired, alternate plates 20 are reversed. To construct long tanks, plates 20 are butt-jointed and connected as by rolled-steel channels 37, Fig. 8 ; the plates 20 may also be reinforced by an external knee plate 38. In another form of tank, all the plates 20 are arranged horizontally with their flanges directed outwardly, the plates being connected at the corners of the tank by angle members. Polygonal tanks may be built by cutting roof and floor plates angularly to form the desired shape, and laying the wall plates horizontally, adjacent walls being connected by inner and outer angular members 40, 41, Fig. 13. Lead, rubber or other lining material may be cut to correspond to the width of the plates 20 with the depth of the flanges, and assembled so as to extend between the flanges. If an inclined roof is required, it may be supported at one edge by wooden battens or a channel, and the end plates 33, Fig. 4, may then be cut to such a shape as to fill the gaps. Cross and diagonal ties may be provided at the corners of the tank, and the bottom of the tank may have its flanges inwardly directed.
