Abstract
Paper &c. is sized by adding to the pulp a finely-divided polyvinyl alcohol, which swells in water and dissolves in hot water, and maintaining the size in a water-swollen state until the wet pulp web is heated, as on the drying cylinders, so that the size partially dissolves and may set into a solid mass. Cold-water-soluble constituents may be separated out before mixing the size with the pulp, and frothing may be reduced by chromium compounds, or ferric chloride &c. The size, particles of which may pass screens of 50 to 500 mesh, may be added to the pulp suspension at the beater or stuff-box &c., and the pulp may thereupon be agitated for 10 to 30 to improve retention of the size by the fibres. The drying cylinders may be at 130 to 450 DEG F. The product is of high wet-strength, flexible and grease-repellant, and may be used for lithographic printing. Clay, casein, rosin and alum, &c. may also be incorporated.
