Abstract

A sash window arrangement comprising a pair of window panels 12, 14 slidable in a frame 10 and connected together by one or more ties 16 operating over pulleys 16 or other direction changing means so that movement of one causes a corresponding movement in the opposite direction of the other. The two panels are in counterbalanced equilibrium at any relative position.

Description

2336385 1 SASH WINDOWS Sash windows in general comprise a pair of sliding
window panels, each having a counterweight acting over a pulley or else having spiral balances. Neither of these arrangements is successful, particularly in coastal areas due to corrosion and this often results in the panels becoming very difficult to slide. Another problem is the failure of the cord or spiral with the result that the panels do not stay in the chosen positions and may even crash down.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a very simple and inexpensive arrangement for a sash window which avoids or at least minimises the difficulties referred to above.
According to the invention a sash window arrangement includes a pair of window panels slidable in a frame and being connected together with a tie whereby movement of one causes a corresponding movement in the opposite direction of the other and being in equilibrium in any relative positions of the two panels.
The tie or ties may operate over direction changing means such as pulley and these may be located neatly in the frame and, if possible, hidden from view. It is possible to use plastic pulleys and the cables may be of stainless steel, preferably swaged with copper.
In many cases it is possible to replace existing arrangements with the arrangement of the invention and in certain circumstances use may be made of existing brackets and other formations to mount the pulleys and anchor the ties.
As most sash windows involve panels of the same mass, the arrangement of the invention makes use of the counter ce, the friction assuring that the two panels remain in the positions chosen. The fact that there is corresponding movement is considered an advantage because the main object of sash windows is to provide a gap at 2 the bottom and at the top for exchange of cool air in at the bottom gap and expulsion of warm air through the top gap.
EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a sash window incorporating the arrangement according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a sectional view along the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring first top Figure 1 a sash window includes a frame 10 and two window panels 12,14. A cable 16 is anchored at a low level on both panels at 18,20. The cable passes over a pulley 22. The anchorage of the cable to the two panels may be effected through existing brackets but it may be necessary to install brackets.
The friction between the edges of the panels and the channels of the frame is sufficient for the panels to stay in any position into which they are slided and, as mentioned above, there will be a bottom and a top gap which encourages proper circulation of air, as intended by sash windows.
The pulley may be a simple plastic wheel 30 mounted in a shell 32 which is simply attachable in the frame so as not to interfere with the sliding of the panels. Preferably, the pulley is located to be hidden from view.
The present invention allows a simple conversion of an existing arrangement to an arrangement according to the invention.
