[Class 106 (ii)] An apparatus for sorting rivets, screws and like articles according to length comprises a rotary or endless track conveyer for the articles and a plurality of impact elements adapted to travel to different heights successively to engage the dependent ends of the articles and to deliver them to an associated shoot. In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, for sorting rivets the rivets are delivered from an inclined scoop and slotted guide (not shown) into slots 13 in a rotatable disc 12. The stems of the rivets extend through the slots and lie opposite impact elements 14, two of which are shown in Fig. 2. Each element 14 is of arcuate form and is secured to a vertical plunger 15 of non- circular section arranged in a bush 19 in a stationary support 16 and controlled by a compression spring 20. On the underside of the disc 12 is an annular cam 22 with a series of inclines 23 that co-operate with the ends 24 of the plungers 15. The impact elements 14 are disposed at different heights so that on rotation of the disc the elements act through the cam and compression springs to impart a blow to the newly inserted rivets in succession from the lowest to the highest element. In a modification, Fig. 4, the rivets are delivered to a slot formed by the space between two conveyer belts 30 driven by a shaft 32. The shaft carries a set of cams 44 arranged in staggered relation to operate a set of spring-controlled impact elements 34, 35. In each form the rivets are shot up into a corresponding receiving scoop 26.
