Abstract
To a spraying and baking enamel comprising an alkyd resin, a pigment and a volatile thinner is added 2-10 per cent by volume of kerosene. The kerosene remains after removal of the volatile solvents during the initial baking and maintains fluidity of the coating to permit levelling without sagging or rippling. In the example, the enamel contains 43-45 per cent solids, consisting of pigment and oil-modified glycerol-phthalate resins mixed with a phenolic resin chinawood oil varnish; and 56-55 per cent volatile constituents consisting of solvent naphtha, petroleum high-flash naphtha, xylol and ethyl acetate. Before use, the enamel is brought to spraying viscosity by addition of 10 per cent kerosene and 10 per cent solvent naphtha. The applied coating may be baked by infra-red heating, e.g. as in Specifications 450,617 and 533,694, [both in Group III], or in a conventional oven. The baking temperature does not exceed 125 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 is not limited either to the use of kerosene as the added ingredient or to the addition of 2-10 per cent of the ingredient which promotes secondary flow.
