523,526. Wrinkling coating compositions. WALDIE, W. A. July 24, 1939, No. 21500. Convention date, May 3. [Class 95] [Also in Group IV] A method of making a non-pigmented coating composition which dries to a wrinkle finish and is devoid of blown oil, comprises the steps of heating a mixture containing raw wrinkling oil, resin and a drier until a homogeneous mixture is produced, and thereafter quickly chilling the mixture without the introduction of cold ingredients. The heat treatment may be carried out at 450-550‹C., and the mixture preferably contains also a drying oil, such as bodied linseed oil. Optional additions to the chilled mixture are thinners, drying oil fatty acids and liquid driers. Specified wrinkling oils are china wood, oiticica and poyok oils, and specified resins are kauri, dammar, congo, cumar, pontianak, manila, zanzibar, elemi, mastic, copal, sandarac, phenolformaldehyde, and glycerol phthalic acid resins. An example is given of a varnish containing a modified phenol-formaldehyde resin, lead acetate or linoleate, raw china wood oil, bodied linseed oil, solvent naphtha and toluol, to which may be added a liquid drier containing drying oil fatty acids.
