Abstract
Metal surfaces are coated with compositions comprising a petroleum hydrocarbon resin, a vinyl resin and a common solvent; the vinyl resin being a copolymer of a major proportion of a vinyl halide and the remainder vinyl acetate; and the hydrocarbon resin being a heat-reactive and partially polymerized resin derived from olefins and diolefins produced by thermal decomposition of high boiling petroleum hydrocarbons (see Group IV (a)). On baking to temperatures of 300-600 DEG F., a migration and stratification is produced whereby the thermoset hydrocarbon resin is adjacent the metal surface and the vinyl resin forms the external surface.ALSO:A coating composition comprises a petroleum hydrocarbon resin, a vinyl resin and a common solvent; the vinyl resin being a copolymer of a major proportion of a vinyl halide and the remainder vinyl acetate; and the hydrocarbon resin being a heat-reactive and partially polymerized resin derived from olefins and diolefins produced by thermal decomposition of high boiling petroleum hydrocarbons and characterized by high iodine number and solubility in aromatic and petroleum naphtha hydrocarbons, ketones and esters. The hydrocarbon resin is preferably in an amount of from 5-40 per cent and the vinyl resin 60-95 per cent by weight of dry solids. The resins are preferably mixed together in the form of solutions. Suitable solvents are methyl ethyl or isobutyl ketone, isophorone, cyclohexanone, 2-nitro-paraffin, mesityl oxide, di-isobutyl ketone, methyl n-amyl ketone, toluol, xylol, naphtha, and hydrogenated naphtha. Pigments, dyes, lakes and metallic, e.g. aluminium, powders may be added. The compositions may be applied to metal surfaces and baked at 300-600 DEG F., producing a migration and stratification whereby the thermoset hydrocarbon resin is adjacent the metal surface and the vinyl resin forms the external surface.
