Abstract
563,680. Potato harvesters. PACKMAN, P. J., and WHATLEY, L. H. Sept. 15, 1942, Nos. 13024 and 18434. [Class 6 (iii)] Potatoes lifted by a share 21 pass rearwardly through a rotary tubular riddle from which they are received by an elevator and discharged by way of a sorting shoot to sacks on the carrier 47. Haulm is cut by a rotary knife 20 working against a forked stationary blade 17. The riddle, positioned with its front end below ground level, consists of parallel rings or a helix spaced and held by longitudinals 25. Helical blades mounted within the riddle feed the potatoes to the rear. A plate closes the upper part of the riddle which may be cylindrical or conical. A trough 72 spans the gap between the riddle and the adjacent part of the cylindrical elevator consisting of a structure similar to the riddle. Internally, the other part of the elevator is provided with inclined ribs. The shoot 35 is fitted with a stone-separator 45 and chat separator 46, as described in Specification 563,694. Haulm caught in the bars of the riddle is dislodged by a brush 30. A motor 40 drives the riddle and its associated members.
