The header of a forage-harvester comprises a transverse feed-platform 21 having a shelf-like forward portion 22 and an upwardly-extending rear wall 24, a cutter-bar 27 extending along the front of the platform and having a reciprocating knife 30 and fixed fingers 31, a feed auger 34 extending longitudinally of the feed-platform and having a cylindrical drum 35 with a spiral flight 36 extending radially outwardly thereof, the axis of rotation of the auger being vertically above and parallel to the knife 30 so that the flight extends in front of the fixed fingers 31. Retractible fingers 44 project from the cylindrical surface 35. The cut crop is swept along to one end of the cutter-bar where an increased number of fingers 44 and vanes 49 feed it between feed rollers 51, 52 and into a cutting chamber 70 comprising knives 64 rotating on spiders 62 and co-operating with a ledger-blade 59. The ledger-blade is replaceable and the knives are adjustable by screws 66. The chopped crop is swept up a shoot 20. The device is mounted-on spaced wheels 12 carried by cranks 111 which are adjustable by a hydraulic ram, Fig. 6 (not shown), on the frame to alter the cutting height.
