Abstract

563,649. Pumping systems. BURN, L., and BARRISON CARTER, Ltd., J. Nov. 6, 1942,No. 15712. [Class 102 (i)] In pumping apparatus comprising an intermittent pressure pump A in communication with a suction pipe C having an inlet valve E at its lower end and with a delivery pipe D providing a substantial head of liquid, the cyclic variations in the velocity of the pump piston setting up resonant impulses in the column of liquid in the suction and delivery pipes whereby a volume of liquid greater than the swept volume of the pump chamber is induced to flow through the system, there is provided an externally-controlled but otherwise resilient piston 1 mobile in a liquid-receiving cylinder B open to the energized liquid conduit ; the volume of the receiving cylinder being at least equal to or greater than the swept volume of the pump, and means are provided for adjusting at will the capacity of the receiving cylinder from maximum to nil. The piston 1 is loaded by a spring 6 and its forward movement is limited by flanges 3, 4, whilst its rearward movement is controlled by abutments 13, 14, the former of which is set by a hand wheel 12. The apparatus may be used for pumping different separate liquids, in which case the impulses energize a spring-loaded plunger device G, and the system is protected by a safety device F whose resilient resistance is greater than that of the devices B, G. The device G comprises a housing 20 connected to the pump A by a conduit H and an isolating valve 40, and containing a flanged cylinder 21 with a packed piston 24 carried by a rod 28 and spring 33. The piston 24 draws through foot valves 22 and delivers to a conduit D<1>. The device F comprises a packed piston 43 controlled by a spring 45 within a cylinder open to the atmosphere. It may be replaced by relief and byepass valves, as described in Specification 563,631, [Group XXVI]. In a modification, the conduit H is within the pipe D<1>.
