Abstract

563,389. Etching. NEEFE, W. F. DE. Feb. 12, 1943, No. 2334. Convention date, Jan. 28, 1942. [Class 100 (ii)] A transfer for applying an etching resist to the surface of metal, glass or other material tu be etched comprises a backing sheet bearing a stencil film of the design, the stencil film being covered by a film of acid resisting material soluble in a solvent in which the stencil film is insoluble. The resist film may be continuous or in the form of a stencil corresponding to the stencil film. The stencil film may consist of a suitable varnish or synthetic resin lacquer not readily soluble in hydrocarbon solvents, such as petrol, kerosine, turpentine or benzine, and the acid resist may consist of bitumen, wax, or rosin, or a mixture of any two or all of them. The transfer is applied to the surface to be etched and caused to adhere thereto by rendering its surface tacky by treatment with methylated spirit, or the surface to be etched may be coated with an acid resistant adhesive soluble in the hydrocarbon solvent. The backing sheet is removed and the solvent applied to remove the etching resistant film and adhesive exposed through the stencil openings and the metal &c. is then etched. The backing sheet may be of paper or metal foil.
