Abstract
563,182. Detecting water in fuel. STERN, H. J., and SURRIDGE, H. R. E. Nov. 11, 1942, No. 15896. [Class 123 (i)] [Also in Group III] A material for detecting water in fuel, lubricating oils and the like is prepared by mixing to a paste a dyestuff which is insoluble in oils but soluble in water, thereby changing colour, an inert white material such as china clay, and a dispersing liquid which is mixable with both water and oil, non-hygroscopic, not a solvent for the dyestuff, and preferably of high boiling point. The material may be spread on a dip-stick. China clay and diacetone alcohol may be mixed to a paste with a small quantity of chlorazol Fast Blue FFS giving a pale grey product which turns deep blue in contact with water. A second dyestuff, such as a pink basic dyestuff, soluble in the dispersing liquid and in water, may be present to give, for example, a pink colour which turns to blue in contact with water.
