Abstract

Abrasive bodies, e.g. grinding and snagging wheels, are obtained by mixing abrasive grains with a resinous binder, obtained by condensing an aromatic amine and formaldehyde in the presence of strong acid and heating the condensate, and bonding and hardening the mixture by heating it to 130-190 DEG C. in the presence of an aromatic amine di-hydrohalide excluding dihydrofluorides. There are specified: aromatic amine dihydrohalides-p - phenylene diamine dihydrochloride, benzidine dihydrochloride and dihydrobromides; aromatic amines-aniline, m-phenylene diamine, m-toluidine, diamino diphenyl methane; acids-phosphoric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, hydriodic, tri- or dichloracetic, maleic, oxalic, picric; abrasives-emery, corundum, silicon carbide, quartz, diamonds, cryolite. The grains may be plasticised with furfural before adding the condensate. Aniline is dissolved in hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde added; after standing for an hour, the mixture is neutralized with alkali and the precipitated resin washed, dried and ground. The powder is mixed with p-phenylene diamine dihydrochloride and with alumina grit wet with furfural and the mixture is pressed in a mould for one hour and a half at 160 DEG C.
