Abstract
Abrasive bodies, e.g. grinding and snagging wheels, are obtained by bonding abrasive grains with a resinous binder obtained by condensing an aromatic aldehyde amine and formaldehyde or furfural in the presence of a strong acid and heating the mixture to 110 DEG -190 DEG C. in the presence of a halohydrin other than fluohydrins. There are specified:- Halohydrins: ethylene brom- and chlorhydrins, glycerol alpha gamma dichlorhydrin, butylene chlorhydrin propylene chlorhydrin, and amylene chlorhydrin. Aromatic amines: aniline m - phenylene diamine m-toluidine, diamino diphenyl methane. Abrasives: emery, corundum, silicon carbide, quartz, diamonds. Acids: phosphoric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, hydriodic trichlor- or dichlor-acetic, maleic, oxalic, picric acids. The grains may be plasticised with furfural prior to adding the condensate. In examples, aniline is dissolved in dilute hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde added to the solution which after standing is neutralised with alkali. The precipitated resin is washed, mixed with abrasive, plasticised with furfural and ethylene chlorhydrin, and the mixture is heated under pressure in a mould for half an hour at 160 DEG C.
