Abstract

Grinding wheels and like abrasive bodies are obtained by wetting a quantity of abrasive grain with a monomeric polyglycol dichloride selected from the di-, tri-, tetra- and pentaglycol dichlorides and stirring into the mixture an aromatic formaldehyde condensate obtained by condensing a primary aromatic amine and formaldehyde in the presence of a strong acid, e.g. phosphoric, spreading the mixture in a mould and pressing and curing at resin curing temperatures. Aromatic amines specified are aniline, toluidines, and diamino diphenyl methane. Acids of equivalent strength to phosphoric are hydrochloric, hydriodic, tri- and di-chlor acetic, maleic, oxalic picric, and sulphuric. Halogenated organic compounds, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene dichloride, rubber hydrochloride, chlorinated rubber, halogen substituted paraffins, halohydrins, may also be added as described in Specification 538,406. Abrasives specified are alumina, emery, corundum silicon carbide, quartz, glass, garnet or diamonds. Furfural may be added as an additional wetting and plasticising agent. The furfural and the dichloride are stated to give cross-linkages with the benzene rings in the aromatic amine condensate. Fused alumina grit is mixed with dichlor-diethyl ether and anhydrite and aniline-formaldehyde resin are added. The mix is cold moulded at a pressure of 3 tons per sq. inch and is then baked for 8 hours at 100 DEG C.
