Abstract

563,082. Storing energy on road vehicles and machinery ; braking. TIPS, E. O. Nov. 10, 1942, No. 15876. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii) and 136 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] Energy is stored and braking is effected on a road vehicle or other machine by means of a swash-plate pump e driven from a road or other wheel and having an adjustable swash-plate n, so that the pump can be used as a brake by pumping fluid, such as oil, from a supply vessel d to a pressure vessel c, or can be used as a motor to drive the vehicle or machine. In the construction shown applied to a bicycle, the shaft p of the pump rotor h carries a roller q which is in contact with the tyre of one of the road wheels so as to be driven thereby. The pump stator e is formed with peripheral passages f, g, communicating respectively with the vessels d, c. The rotor h has chambers k communicating at m with the passages f, g and containing plungers k pressed outwards against the swashplate n by springs (not shown). The swashplate is tiltable about trunnions o and when in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5 causes the device to act as a pump, oil being pumped from d to c and compressing air above a floating piston r. When the swash-plate is at right angles to the shaft p, the plungers k do not reciprocate in their chambers j and the device is out of action ; when the swash-plate is tilted in the opposite direction, the device acts as a motor and drives the bicycle. The rotor h may be connected to a cycle or other wheel by chain, belt or other gearing, or it may be incorporated in the hub of a wheel. A connection including a spring-loaded valve may be provided between the storage vessels c, d so as to avoid emptying the vessel d. A brake lever may be arranged to act through lost-motion mechanism so as first to cause the rotor h to be driven and next to vary the braking effort progressively. In the case of a motor vehicle, the energy stored may be used to assist in driving the vehicle or to drive accessories such as windscreen wipers, jacks, window and hood opening and closing devices or for engine starting.
