Abstract

Resinous condensation products are made by heating an aminotriazine and o-cresol or a xylenol or higher homologue of phenol, which cannot be converted by ordinary methods into formaldehyde condensation products, with formaldehyde. Suitable aminotriazines are melamine and the mixture obtained by heating cyanamide or dicyandiamide in an open vessel. The phenol or the aminotriazine may first be partially condensed with part or all of the formaldehyde and the other components then added, if necessary with further formaldehyde. Alternatively, the phenol and the aminotriazine may be separately condensed with formaldehyde, the products mixed and further condensed. In an example, xylenol is mixed with neutralized formaldehyde and heated at 90-97 DEG C. with melamine. Water is removed by distillation in vacuo and the fluid resin coloured with an aqueous solution of Nigrosine K powder and kneaded with a mixture of wood meal, zinc or calcium stearate and magnesium oxide and dried to give a moulding powder.
