Abstract
562,011. Hinge joints for frame structures. AKTIEBOLAGET ODELBERG & OLSON. Nov. 20, 1942, No. 16439. Convention date, Nov. 14, 1941. [Class 65 (ii)] In adjustable frame structures, such as chairs, bedsteads, stretchers, &c., the frame members 20, 22, 24, 26 are connected by lockable swivel joints 28, 30, each joint connecting at least three members, and arranged in coaxial pairs 28, 30, certain of the joints in each group being adapted to be released or locked by a common operating member by an axially-directed force, others of the joints in the same group being unaffected and remaining in their locked or released position. Each joint comprises a hub 34 connected to 20 and hubs 36, 38 connected respectively to 22 and 24, the hub 34 being threaded on a hollow shaft 40 and having teeth 80 to engage similar teeth on 36, 38 in the locked position. The hubs are held in the release position by springs 88 and are moved to locking' position by a cam lever 54, 58, pivoted at 56 on a two-part spindle 44 provided with a threaded connecting stud 60 and with a knob 46 at the other end abutting on the hub 38 of the other joint. By rotating 46, the length of the shaft 44 may be altered. Mounted on the shaft 40 between the two joints is a variable spacing and looking device comprising an axially adjustable shaft 62, 76, 78 and'rotatable locking cams 72 on a lever 64 pivoted in slots 68 in shaft 40. The hub 34 may have bosses 82 each' carrying a resilient tooth 86 engaging teeth 84 on hubs 36, 38 to keep the teeth 80 on the three hubs in alignment. Brake springs 90 bear on the teeth 84 of hubs 36, 38 to prevent sudden collapse. In another form, the locking of the hubs is effected by friction discs carried by the hubs, and in another, by friction at the peripheries of a number of segments between the inner and outer hubs. Specification 554,784 is referred to.
