Abstract

Calcium pantothenate is prepared by reacting metallic calcium with b -alanine and a -hydroxy-b b -dimethyl-g -butyrolactone in an alcoholic medium. A large number of hydroxy compounds are specified as suitable solvents, they include aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic alcohols such as the monohydroxy alcohols methanol isopropanol and butanol, the polyhydroxy aliphatic alcohols such as ethylene glycol, glycerine, and propylene glycol, ether alcohols such as cellosolve and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, carbitols such as diethylene glycol monomethyl ether, alicyclic alcohols such as cyclopentanol and methyl alcohol and other alcohols such as benzyl alcohol, and furfurol. Three examples are given in each of which b -alanine is first treated with metallic calcium and the product reacted with a -hydroxy-b b -dimethyl-g -butyrolactone, the solvents being respectively methanol, propanol and n-butanol.
