Abstract

Disecondary diamines are prepared by forming quaternary salts by alkylating diarylidene derivatives of primary diamines, preferably with a dialkyl sulphate or an alkyl ester of p-toluene sulphonic acid and subsequently hydrolysing these salts. The diamines include ethylene-, trimethylene-, tetramethylene-, hexamethylene-, decamethylene-, and triglycol-diamine, p - bis - (b - aminomethyl)benzene and p-bis-(b -aminoethyl)benzene, which are converted to the diarylidene derivatives by admixture with an aldehyde, e.g., benzaldehyde. In examples dibenzal-hexamethylenediamine is alkylated by methyl-p-toluene sulphonate in presence of ethyl acetate and the quaternary salt is hydrolysed by water to N : N1 - dimethylhexamethylenediamine, and p-bis-(b -methyl-amino-ethyl)-benzene is prepared from p-bis-(b -benzalaminoethyl)-benzene which is itself prepared from p-bis(b -aminoethyl)-benzene and benzaldehyde.
