Abstract

Dental moulding properties &c. of hydrocolloids, e.g agar-agar, are improved by adding a slightly alkaline aqueous dispersion of an oxide or hydroxide of an amphoteric metal, e.g. tin, zinc, manganese or aluminium, and a finely-divided, water-insoluble inorganic filler, e.g. calcium sulphate, precipitated calcium carbonate, or magnesium carbonate. A borate, e.g. calcium metaborate may also be included. The hydroxide may be formed by precipitation from an acid salt solution such as tin sulphate or chloride by adding an alkaline compound of an alkali metal, and may be peptized by potassium hydrate.
