Abstract

Abrasive or cutting tools are made with abrasive grains, e.g diamonds as grit, dust, or stones, quartz, boron- or silicon carbide &c. embedded in a matrix of compressed metal particles and consolidated by heating, the metals, which may be partly or entirely alloy, comprise those of Specification 395,745, viz: one or more of (a) tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, and one or more of (b) silver, gold, aluminium, copper, platinum, tin, zinc, with or without one or more of (c) titanium, vanadium, zirconium, cobalt, chromium, nickel, iron, beryllium. The metal (a) may be in preponderance, e.g. from 45 to 95 per cent, and the metals (b) and (c) may be present as alloys. The heating may be in more than one stage; it may be effected in a protective atmosphere of hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbon gas or vapour, or in vacuum.
