560,197. Lubricating compositions. WITHERS, J. S. (Shutt, R. S., and Waitkins, G. R.). July 7, 1942, No. 9414. [Class 91] Lubricating compositions comprise a lubricating oil or grease base and a minor percentage of selenium dioxide or a seleno-cyanate. The latter may be an inorganic or an organic compound and the compounds specified comprise potassium or sodium seleno-cyanate and methyl, butyl, octyl, lauryl, dodecyl, oleyl, stearyl, phenyl, tolyl, benzyl, or naphthyl selenocyanates. The proportion of the addition compound is usually less than 1 per cent by weight and even as low, for example; as 0.07 per cent. The compounds may be added in solution ; specified solvents for selenium dioxide comprise dioxane, the aliphatic alcohols, glycols, glycerine, and other hydroxy-organic compounds ; and for the inorganic seleno-cyanates, acetone and other ketones, the organic compounds being preferably added directly. The addition agents improve the extreme pressure properties and the oxidation resistance of the oils andgreases.
