Abstract

Sheets, slabs, blocks, pipe and other sections are made from mineral wool, slag wool, glass wool, or rock wool by a process involving mixing an aqueous suspension of mineral wool fibres with an aqueous emulsion comprising an alkyd resin or an oil-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin, and precipitating the resin on the wool fibres by the addition of an acid or acid salt such as alum, zinc sulphate, or phosphoric acid. The alkyd resin may be modified with Tung oil or other drying oil having three conjugated double bonds, or may be chemically reacted with a drying oil and a reactive phenol-formaldehyde condensation product. The oil-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin may also be prepared with the aid of Tung oil. The resin may be emulsified in the molten state, or as a solution in benzene, toluene, or white spirits, with the aid of ammonium caseinate, methyl cellulose, 1-iso-propyl-naphthalene-4-sulphonic acid, or other emulsifying agent. The mineral wool fibres may be pretreated with water-repelling, non-volatile, petroleum products or with starch, which may be added at the time of forming the fibres e.g. by injecting starch paste into the fibre-forming steam jets. Alternatively a starch paste may be added to the mineral wool suspension before or after the resin emulsion. Bentonite may also be added to the fibre suspension or the resin emulsion. The pH value of the resin emulsion is adjusted with ammonia solution to equal that of the fibre suspension. After precipitation of the resin on the fibres, the mixture may be run into moulds, excess water drained off, and the mould pressed and/or heated.ALSO:Sheets, slabs, blocks, pipe and other sections are made from mineral wool, slag wool, glass wool, or rock wool by a process involving mixing an aqueous suspension of mineral wool fibres with an aqueous emulsion comprising an alkyd resin or an oil-modified phenol-formaldehyde resin, and precipitating the resin on the wool smoothing segments 31 the outward traverse of which is limited by fixed skirts 271 depending from the disc. The disc 27 and the mould 10 are rotated, by independent means, in the same direction, the disc faster than the mould. The disc is raised by hydraulic means, as moulding proceeds. The moulded body may be produced in layers of the same or different materials, e.g. cement and as asphalt.
