Abstract
559,941. Ion-exchanger materials, synthetic resins. PERMUTIT CO., Ltd., and HOLMES, E. L. Sept. 10, 1941, Nos. 11619, 13599 and 14382. [Class 46) [Also in Group IV] The cation-ion exchange capacity of sulphonated cation-exchange material is increased by heating with an aqueous solution of a sulphating agent, i.e. a water-soluble compound of SO<SP>2</SP>. Sulphonated cation-exchange material means an organic, waterinsoluble cation-exchange material, consisting either' of a. sulphonated carbonaceous material or a sulphonated synthetic resin which material contains hydroyl groups in addition to sulphuric groups; typical examples of each class are detailed, reference being made in respect of the first class to Specifications 450,179. 450,540 450574, 455,374, 473,647, 486,471, 489,338, 492,032, 492,316, 506,807, 512,323 and 513,801, and, in respect of the second class, to Specifications 489,437, 515,517 and 521,207, [both in Group IV], U.S.A. Specification 2,235,971 and French Specification 816,448. As sulphiting-agents, sodium metabisulphite is preferred for sulphonated carbonaceous material and a sulphite or bisulphite for sulphonated resins; heating is effected at 110-135‹ C, preferably 120-125‹ C. for the former and at 110- 150‹. C, preferably 130-140‹ C for the latter. , In examples, (I) sulphonated coal, prepared by treatment with S0<SP>3</SP> at 150‹ C. for 12 hours, in which all mobile hydrogen ions have been exchanged for sodium ions, is heated at 125‹ C. for 2 hours with a solution of sodium metabisulphite; (II) Australian brown lignite, sulphonated by treatment with oleum at 150‹ C. is further heated with a solution of sodium metabisulphite; (III) the sulphonated material of (2) is heated with a solution of sodium bisulphite; (IV) a quebracho tannin/formaldehyde resin, after sulphonation with oleum, is heated with a solution of sodium metabisulphite at 130‹ C., or (V) with a solution of calcium bisulphite at 125‹ C.; (VI) a C- stage phenol-formaldehyde resin, after sulphonation with oleum at 200‹ C., is heated at 130‹ C. with a solution of sodium sulphite; (VII) a resin produced from sulphonated phenol and formalin, after further sulphonation with oleum, is treated with sodium metabisulphite as in (IV), and (VIII) sulphonated polystyrene is heated with a solution of sodium metabisulphite. Specifications 450,308 and 474,361, [Group IV], also are referred to.
