Abstract

559,881. Bearings. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Garrison, R. P., and Garrison, J. R.). Feb. 2, 1942, No. 1390. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXII] A bearing or the bed of a machine tool &c. is maintained at a temperature above the surroundings by circulating a fluid therethrough and controlling the temperature of the fluid by a thermostat and an electric heater. The bearing or. machine is initially adjusted or set-up with the fluid circulating, and thus whenever it is used the bearings will be correctly adjusted and the parts correctly aligned: Fig. 1 shows a chuck for holding a motor car differential member. The bevel gear is located by its teeth engaging studs 14 and the other end of the shaft is located by a spring pressed centre 20 movable to the left by a hand lever. The shaft is inserted through an opening 6 in the chuck. The bearings 4, 5 are lubricated through ports 51, 52 and the heating liquid is circulated thermo-syphonically through passages 63, 64, being heated by electrical or other heaters.
