Abstract

559,667. Inspecting the interior of cavities. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., MAXTED, R., GRAPES, G. T., HULL, J. N., and HANKINSON, C. H. Nov. 26, 1942, No. 16788. [Class 97 (i)] Apparatus for illuminating and viewing the interior of a cavity comprises means directing at least two light beams therein and a viewing mirror so disposed as not to obstruct the beams ; the apparatus may be used to facilitate the viewing of surgical operations. As shown, a framework F<SP>1</SP> ... F<SP>4</SP> carries mirrors M<SP>1</SP>, M<SP>2</SP> on pivots P<SP>1</SP>, p<SP>2</SP> to direct converging beams from a source S through openings H<SP>1</SP>, H<SP>2</SP> into the cavity. The convergence may be altered by adjusting the mirror positions through a knob K, crank disc A, and links K<SP>1</SP>, K<SP>2</SP>, and the framework may be rotated, on trunnions P5, P<SP>6</SP> fixed in a stationary bracket B, to vary the position of the plane containing the axes of the converging beams. The viewing mirror M<SP>3</SP> may be pivoted in a bracket M' secured to the frame, and it may be connected through gearing to one of the trunnions so as to turn at half the speed at which the frame turns on the trunnions, thus enabling the viewpoint to remain constant for all rotational positions of the frame. The cavity may be viewed with the aid of a distant telescope, or an image may be projected thereby on to a screen. The bracket B may be adjustably fixed on a support column SC, and the lamp may be separately carried on the column its light being controlled by variable diaphragms D and condenser lenses L<SP>1</SP>, L<SP>2</SP> ; casings C' may surround the framework except for a central gap necessary for the lamp.
