Abstract

558,638. Valves. TRTCO PRODUCTS CORPORATION. July 10, 1942, No. 9645. Convention date. July 18, 1941. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXIII] In a windscreen cleaning system in which the wiper arm 13 is operated by a fluid pressure motor 14, and cleansing or de-icing liquid is supplied by a diaphragm pump 21 and a sprayer 22 from a reservoir 20 the pump being operated by fluid pressure or suction the supply of operating fluid to the pump and motor is controlled by valves operated by a common member 53, 55, Fig. 2, which is moved axially to control the pump and rotatably to control the motor. The arrangement permits the pump and motor to be operated independently or conjointly. The fluid pressure for the pump and motor may be obtained from a vacuum pump, or as shown by the intake manifold 40 of the engine a pipe 42 from which is formed with a branch 43 leading to the motor 14, and a branch 44 leading to the valve 46 which can connect the branch 44 to a pipe 32 leading to the diaphragm pump 21 and when connected moves the diaphragm 25 against the action of a spring 29. To make this connection the valve control member 53 is pushed inwards against the action of a spring 70 to the position shown in Fig. 2 and lifts a spring-pressed lift valve 64 from its seat 62. to connect the pipes 44, 32. Simultaneously with the opening of the valve 64 a valve 69 is closed. This valve 69 connects pipe 44 to atmosphere when pressure on the valve is released, and the valve returns to inoperative position in which the lift valve 64 closes connection between the pipes 44, 32. To operate the valve 16 of the motor 14 the knob 55 is rotated and an arm 75 on the valve by means of a link 78 moves the valve 16 to open or closed position. In a modification the inlet passage 60 from the pipe 44 is arranged coaxially with the valve stem 53, and in this case the valve 64 is formed with a notched periphery to facilitate fluid flow when the valve is open.
